Ontario introduced the Froebel Kindergarten into the Public School system in 1887, and it was the first government in the world to do so. Dr. Barbara Corbett discovered Ontario ‘s remarkable early childhood educational heritage while studying for her Doctoral Degree in Education at the University of Toronto. She became totally dedicated to Friedrich Froebel’s educational philosophy and vision for young children.
In 1970 she, along with Judith Bowlby, founded the Froebel Kindergarten in Erindale Village, Mississauga. By 1980, grade 3 to 8 were added and they would serve to demonstrate the value of the kindergarten foundation in the lives of the children.
The Froebel Education Centre built a new home in 1990 to house the Kindergarten (ages 3-7), the School (grades 3-8) and the Froebel Institute (kindergartner and teacher training).
